Sunday Thoughts 4

- I had the great opportunity to preach this morning at church.  The message was essentially what we can learn from teenagers as they develop spiritually.  What I tried to highlight was that some common fears of teenagers actually betray their priorities, particularly the fear of alienation, vulnerability, and the unknown.  Ironically (or sadly depending on how you look at it) I was pretty nervous during the 1st service.  Before I went up to speak I realized how idiotic I was being I got calmed down a bit, but still was rather anxious.  So what did I learn, I am not better than a 13 year old.  In related news the 2nd service went a lot better in terms of feeling more comfortable with the delivery.

Now onto my typical rants concerning current events

- A note to Rep. Grayson; calm down.  Look I get that you are working the media with your whole “die quickly” website and all but to call Dick Cheney a vampire, this is just becoming juvenile.  I understand that if you want a punching bag the former vice-president is about as an easy of a target to find, but it is coming across as rather mickey mouse.  Cheney is interested in defending his legacy and advancing his beliefs by attempting to insert himself into the dialog.  However it doesn’t seem that Cheney is in the business of winning people over, so Rep. Grayson let him preach to choir and be done with it.  In a similar issue the White House seems to be picking  a fight with Fox News.  The network has created a great business model and had a lot of success, but by turning them into an adversary I think Obama’s white house may be creating an unnecessary issue.

- Bud Selig needs to go and follow Roger Goodell around for a day.  There is no way that an American football franchise oversees should even be a conversation, but not only is it a conversation it is a stated goal for the shield.  Major League Baseball is struggling to be relevant, despite all of it’s history and global appeal.  If any professional sports league should be looking to expand globally it is the MLB, with the league being so heavily influenced by players from Latin America and Asia it would only makes sense.  Instead Selig expects the world to come to them, instead of finding ways to export their product.  The NFL is exporting their product and creating a market, while the MLB is ignoring a market and losing their product.

- Like her, hate her, or wish she would fade away you can’t deny the fact that anything Sarah Palin does over the next 20+ years will be covered by the media.  Maverick or idiot she matters and will be studied in political science classes for generations.

- If you don’t watch Mad Men, you could watch this latest episode and immediately be hooked.  Incredible episode that does a great job of bringing you up to speed.  Don Draper is going to be one of the greatest characters in TV history.
